United Way // The Cost of Living

Role: Director, Designer, Producer, Performer, Animator, Composer
Agency: 24G

You’re not supposed to pick favorites. But I can’t help it: this is my favorite thing I’ve ever worked on.

I directed and designed this award-nominated digital simulation for United Way. Designed as an empathy-building tool, The Cost of Living gives players an idea of what it's like to make tough decisions with limited resources. It teaches players about the work United Way does for the community and the people they serve. Credentials to experience the game can be granted upon request.

This simulation has been experienced by thousands of people, including policy-makers, government officials, and CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. It is used for presentations all over the country, as well as has a dedicated room to the experience in the Fisher Building in Detroit, Michigan.

On my radio documentary series about game design, The Curious Gamer, I dedicated an episode to this project, interviewing leaders at United Way who gave a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the project and its impact on the community.
